Man admits flytipping furniture at Chorley beauty spot

Dumping household furniture on the side of a country lane in Rivington landed a Leyland man in court.

Carl Pollitt, 26, of Ashurst Road, pleaded guilty to fly-tipping when he appeared before South Ribble magistrates.

In a prosecution brought by Chorley Council, the court heard that a white hire van was seen to pull out from where it was parked at Sheep house Lane, Rivington, by a contractor for United Utilities who made a note of the registration number after seeing a settee, wardrobe and cushions on the side of the road which hadn’t been there earlier in the day.

Pollitt admitted the offence saying he had been experiencing financial hardship and had thought it would be expensive to take the items to a recycling centre and could not afford to pay anyone to remove them.

He was fined £220, and ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £737.50 in costs.

A council spokesman said the cost of dealing with waste tipped on land in Chorley was nearly £46,000 last year.
