A MAN has died in hospital after being struck by a double decker bus as he attempted to cross a town-centre road.
Peter Gaskell was hit by a Stagecoach bus and suffered serious head injuries.
The 31-year-old, of Alma Row, Hoghton, was crossing Station Road in Bamber Bridge on Friday when the accident happened.
He spent five days in the intensive care unit of the Royal Preston Hospital fighting for his life. But he died at 4am this morning.
A police spokesman said: “Mr Gaskell was crossing the road from the nearside when he was in collision with the double decker bus which was travelling towards Leyland.
“He received serious head injuries and died in hospital."
The coroner has been informed and an inquest into his death is expected to be opened in the next few days.
The accident happened at 6.50pm. Police sealed off Station Road for more than four hours after the incident with forensic officers scouring the crash site.
The driver of the 125 Stagecoach North West service to Chorley was treated at the scene for shock but declined hospital treatment.
Police said the incident was being investigated but at this stage the driver was not believed to be at fault.
Officers have appealed for anybody who witnessed the collision to contact them by calling 01772 203203.
