Member of Parliament for Chorley Lindsay Hoyle has voiced his concern about the rise of persistent truants from school.
Figures show an increase in the number of children classified as persistent truants, said Mr Hoyle.
Now the Labour MP has tabled a Commons Motion calling for a community-wide approach to be implemented by communicating with parents and increasing the number and responsibility of welfare officers in cases of persistent truancy.
He said: "Truancy is a problem which faces schools throughout the country.
"While levels of achievement continue to improve in terms of exam results it is important that all children attend school.
"Persistent truants not only miss out on the opportunity to learn and gain qualifications but also are often linked with anti-social behaviour and juvenile nuisance.

"The government, education authorities and schools need to work closely with parents and children to address this problem.
"While exam results are improving there is a risk of an increased polarisation as a substantial number of pupils make less progress and we must do everything possible to ensure that all children attend school."
