  • Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle calls for free TV licences for pensioners

Lindsay Hoyle MP for Chorley is calling on the government to extend the provision of free TV licences to all pensioners.

Currently pensioners aged 75 years and over enjoy free television licences.

Mr Hoyle wants this scheme extended so that all pensioners receive a free licence.

In addition this will put an end to the anomalies within the current system whereby the rate of television licence fees levied varies between those living in sheltered accommodation, nursing homes or living in their own home.

He said: "It is necessary to remember how important a television can be for many elderly people who spend several hours in their own homes and depend heavily on their televisions.

"I am pleased that those pensioners aged 75 and over receive a free TV licence.

"However, the time has come to extend this scheme and help our pensioners even further.

"With the cost of living rising in many cases I think this is one area where the government can make a real difference to the lives of millions of pensioners."
