Coppull mum admits falsely obtaining benefits

First published in Coppull

A MUM of two from Coppull has pleaded guilty to falsely obtaining over £1,000 in housing and council tax benefits.

Tracey Deans, 37, of Spendmore Lane told Chorley Council that her husband had stopped work but failed to notify the Council as soon as he started working again.

South Ribble Magistrates sitting at Leyland were told that Mrs Deans had been caught on two previous occasions for failing to report a change in circumstances and had accepted a financial penalty and a formal caution for these offences.

Councillor Kevin Joyce, who oversees benefits for Chorley Council said: “Prosecuting someone for benefit fraud is a serious matter and not one the Council takes lightly.

“Mrs Deans has ignored previous warnings and now she has a criminal record.

“It is vital that people let as know as soon as their circumstances change.”

Taking into account her early plea, magistrates sentenced Mrs Deans to a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered her to pay costs of £200.
