Police in Chorley are appealing for information after a theft from a stand alone ATM at the southbound Charnock Richard motorway services.
Two males, dressed head to toe in black, and wearing balaclavas and gloves, cut into the ATM on Saturday at 3.35am and removed cash cassettes containing several thousand of pounds in Bank of England £10 and £20 notes.
They left the scene in a dark coloured Audi A4, bearing false plates of registration number AV54 FGN, driven by a third person.
DC Will Hogan who is investigating the incident commented: "I would like to speak to anyone who was in and around the services (north or southbound), and noticed any suspicious activity.
"I would urge anyone that has seen anything in relation to this to get in touch with myself or one of my colleagues."
Anyone with any information can contact Chorley CID on 01772 246364 or via Southern Communications Centre on 0845 1 25 35 45.
Information can also be given about crime anonymously by telephoning Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
