Buckshaw Parkway station to open in October

TRAIN travellers can look forward to a new station opening in Chorley next month after it was announced Buckshaw Parkway would start operating on October 3.

The two-platform station is between Leyland and Chorley stops on the Preston to Manchester line.

It is expected to accommodate 450,000 passengers a year and will be operated by Northern Rail.

Buckshaw Parkway includes a 150-metre long platform, 200-car parking spaces with bus and taxi drop-off points, a fully accessible station building and steel footbridge with lifts started in the winter.

Excellent news - pity it costs so much to build a new station these days.

It's great to see new stations built, especially following the announcement that a futher 675 stations may soon become unstaffed, but please consider this.........

The reported cost of building this station from scratch is reported as being £6.8M. The cost of the 2001 (note, 10 years ago) revamp of Blackburn station was allegedly £5M, and what did the good townsfolk of Blackburn get for it....a complete load of rubbish, so much so that another £1M had to spent this year to bring it up to some sort of even basic, acceptable standard.

Would anyone please care to explain why the original Blackburn figure was so comparatinely high, or were they being stung by cowboys? Judging by the state of the uneven tarmac on platform 4, I suspect this may well be the case.
