Day of celebratrion planned for Brinscall pool centenary

A Chorley swimming pool marks its 100th birthday this weekend with a day of celebration.

To mark the landmark birthday of Brinscall Pool, a centenary family day has been organised on June 25.

There will be plenty going on both inside and outside the pool and Chorley’s very own Olympic swimming hopeful, Ryan Bennett, will be there to mark the occasion and present winners from the day’s relays with certificates.

Families will be able to compete in the intergenerational swimming relay, have a go at water walking, join in the inflatable fun session or take part in the 50 plus aqua aerobics in the pool.

Plus there will be a bouncy castle, sports activities, street dance, Zumba and much more outside.

A 1911 swimsuit race has also been arranged.

The fun starts at 10am and will go on until 3.30pm.

Councillor John Walker who is responsible for leisure activities at Chorley Council said: “Brinscall Swimming Pool is a fantastic facility and is one of the oldest swimming pools in the country.

“It is only fitting that we share this day with the people who use it and ask them to celebrate with us.

“There are lots of swimming relays and some free swimming sessions available on the day but anyone wanting to take part will need to book in advance.”

Brinscall Swimming Pool first opened on June 22, 1911.

It was originally a gift for the mill workers from the owners and was built to commemorate the coronation of King George V, which took place on the same day.

In 2008, £190,000 was spent to upgrade the facilities and make the building more energy efficient.

Brinscall Swimming Pool is located at Lodge Bank and is open seven days a week.
