A CAR crashed into a fence post at a notorious accident blackspot.

Police said the incident happened on the A675 Belmont Road, between Belmont and Abbey Village, when the driver swerved to avoid a motorcycle travelling in the opposite direction.

The air ambulance was called because of the rural location but the driver was not injured in the crash which happened at 2pm on Friday.

Amir Khan would have got there faster than the air ambulance.

Maybe - but you can't legislate for the idiocy of others. I travel along that road several times a week and can vouch for there being many idiots. Let's face it the road was constructed when horse and cart was the most common form of transport. It's very narrow, unlit, has many dangerous bends and adverse camber in several places. It's totally unsuitable for high speed traffic but, of course, there are many who think that they can ignore the obvious hazards and who like to pretend that they are rexperienced rally drivers. All too often we see the consequences.

exactly...the easiest answer is to take their licences away......its a 50 mph....with white lines, cats eyes...any experienced driver would drive within the limits and not have a bump....all the places i ve seen the accidents along that road are obviously driver error......more cops required to enforce the law.....

Let's have a guess: Age ~21? Car - BMW? Speed - 140mph?

Driver error yes but also the road conditions are a contributory factor. Or how else do you explain why this stretch of road seems to have 10 times more accidents than anywhere else?

Yes, there's a fair few idiotic youngsters but there's also many who appear to be more then 40 years old and dressed in shirts and ties i.e. the stereotypical company car driver.

the roads not dangerous, just the idiots behind the wheel, better brakes, suspension,ai
r bags etc make people think their indetructable in the mode of transport.Leave the road out of the equation.I know I lived in Belmont 30 years and know the road well.....

BoltonBornNBred, Bolton says...

Some drivers go daft on that stretch of road. I had one idiot decide to drive wide whilst he was speeding at around 60mph into the 30 zone, almost took my wing mirror off, he simply drove on t the same speed. It needs speed cameras and traffic clamp down.

I think a well-publicised recent case has clearly demonstrated that there will always be idiots who can't drive/won't drive at the appropriate speed for prevailing conditions..... and even if they get caught nothing much will come of it. Or is that only boxers?

We knew that p Jay,

Sorry if I've been stating the bleeding obvious but this is a comments forum and I've only been making comments on the state of this road. And if one idiotic driver modifies their driving style because they have been reminded of how dangerous this location is then surely you don't mind 10 seconds of tedium out of your full and exciting lives?

I think it's too simplistic to just attribute these accidents to driver error and to say that any experienced driver could avoid the hazards. Is that true? Have you never never made an error whilst driving? If you claim that you haven't then please can you choose my lottery tickets for me this weekend? Or on second thoughts, maybe not - your run of luck is due to end very soon. The fact is, we all make errors. If you make one of those errors on this road then the conditions are such that you have less time to take avoiding action.

There is also the issue of other drivers whose antics force others to have accidents? If you are the innocent party then will you always be able to avoid an accident? I think not.

If we are being pedantic then it may be true to say that there are no dangerous roads and that it's drivers who cause accidents, but it is also true that some roads are more hazardous than others - and this is one of them.

Things can be done to help reduce the risk from all these factors and lower the chances of having to read about the tragic consequences of accidents that are witnessed all too often on this road.

The road needs to be widened - not to create extra lanes but so that there can be greater separation of traffic with central hatched areas and traffic islands. The bends need to be made less sharp and some of the humps levelled. Simple things but they would help enormously.
ur answering your own questions
Well, no actually. I didn't ask any questions. I was just merely pointing out that this road is hazardous for all road users and the idiots can be any type of driver - not just youngsters.

One thing that we all should bear in mind is that we should beware of becoming complacent and assuming that we can easily handle the road conditions and that accidents always happen to other people.

So sorry for boring you again, but there for grace of God etc....

So many bad drivers around. Interesting to see today's Manchester Evening News headline:

"BOXER KHAN'S SPEED BAN FARCE"

accompanied by plenty of adverse comment. Compare and contrast with the BN's pusilanimous sycophancy.

I've just read about the sad death of the person involved in a head-on collision near Abbey Village in October which I was unaware of previously. Do you still maintain this road isn't dangerous?

abbott71, bolton says...

yes.....if the police are looking at a dangeorus driving prosecution that suggests driver error...

All roads are dangerous when travelled at excessive speeds . Stick to speed limits and drive according to road conditions i.e. slow down when it’s wet. Give you self plenty of room to stop and you will be ok. Stop blaming the roads it’s the drivers that crash going to fast. And if they wont slow down make them by fitting speed limiters to there cars. Or by fitting oval shaped wheels to peoples cars that are caught speeding, for 12 months. I call it the speed bump affect
