Benefit scam

A mum of one from Chorley has been convicted of falsely claiming more than £5,000 in benefits.

Julie Leyland, 42, of Lavender Grove, claimed she was too ill to work but investigators found that she had been working for 11 months.

Magistrates sitting at South Ribble heard that the fraud came to light when Leyland was asked to complete a review form for housing and council tax benefits.

She declared that she had started a job but had failed to notify the authority that she had started 11 months earlier.

She was ordered to complete 60 hours of unpaid work within 12 months and pay £85 costs.

The benefits overpaid are currently being recovered.
