Police warn Chorley FC fans ahead of big match

TROUBLE: Police at last year’s game where fans clashed TROUBLE: Police at last year’s game where fans clashed

Police are warning football supporters attending this weekend’s big match at Victory Park to behave or face arrest.

Chorley play host to Chester in the Evostik Premier Division with a crowd of more than 2,000 expected, including 1,000 visiting fans.

In February last year, violence flared during and after the corresponding fixture, with several arrests made.

Groups of fans clashed inside the ground and on Ranglett’s recreation ground and in the town centre after the game.

Supporters are being urged to arrive in good time and keep their cars locked and not to leave any valuables on show.

There will be a significant police presence at the game and officers are warning anyone who is thinking of causing trouble not to bother as they will be dealt with.

The Magpies currently lie fourth in the league while Chester are top of the pile.

Match Commander Inspector Steve Evans said, “It is one of the biggest games of the season for Chorley and I know everyone is really looking forward to it.

“We have worked closely with both Chorley Football Club and local licensees and there will be a policing operation in place on the day in and around the ground as well as the town centre with the main aim being that everyone can enjoy the game safely.

“There were some incidents of disorder when the two teams played each other last season and there will be a police presence at the ground. Anyone who is looking to cause trouble should be warned that it will not be tolerated.

“The vast majority of people want to enjoy the game and do not need mindless idiots spoiling it for them.

“I would also urge people attending the game to make sure they take the necessary crime prevention measures like keeping valuables safe and cars locked.

“We don’t want to give criminals that opportune moment to pounce.”
