Fire crews attended a fire in Buckshaw Village caused by a pan lid igniting on a stove. The alarm was raised at 4pm on Thursday at a property on Darwin Fold.
The occupier had been cooking food in a large pan, the lid was made of plastic with handles that protruded over the body of the pan, these melted and subsequently set alight.
A neighbour, an off duty police officer helped tackle the fire after the occupant of the house was alerted by a smoke alarm.
Ian Hainsworth, watch manager at Leyland fire station, said: "Once again we cannot stress enough the importance of having a working smoke alarm in domestic properties.
"If on this occasion no alarm had been fitted this fire would have gone undetected for some considerable time and the danger to the occupant would have been greatly magnified."
There were no reported injuries during the incident.
