NHS Central Lancashire’s new chief executive will start his new job having protected himself against flu.

Joe Rafferty, who takes up his new role next month, is in one of the ‘at risk’ groups of developing serious consequences from contracting flu.

As a type two diabetic, Joe is highlighting the benefits of being immunised against the virus by encouraging the over 65s and other ‘at risk’ groups to have the flu jab.

Joe, 46, is currently director of commissioning and strategy at NHS North West.

He said: “The flu vaccine is the best way of avoiding flu and flu-related illnesses.

"The process is virtually painless and takes just a few seconds and costs nothing.

“Flu is an unpleasant experience for most people, but for some it can lead to more serious illnesses including bronchitis or pneumonia.

"If you do catch the flu it could lead on to a more serious illness.”

Around 75 per cent of people aged over 65 living in central Lancashire had their flu jabs last year.

NHS Central Lancashire is hoping to reach even more people in this year’s annual vaccination campaign.

If you think you may need a flu jab but have not had notification speak to your GP, practice nurse, pharmacist or contact NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 or by logging on to www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk for details.
