New road markings at a busy Chorley roundabout branded as ‘nonsensical’ are to be removed.

Recently painted traffic markings at the roundabout, near the Tesco supermarket on Foxhole Road, meant the road was reduced from two lanes to one in the Chorley bound direction.

The changes, instigated by Lancashire County, led to consternation among motorists who claimed they increased traffic congestion in Euxton and Astley Village.

But council bosses have had a rethink and decided to remove the chevrons.

A LCC Highways spokesman said: “The changes were made with the intention of increasing capacity on the roundabout.

“However, this has not been the case so the hatching at the end of Westway and on Southport Road as you head towards Chorley will be removed.”

Councillor Mark Perks welcomed the decision.

He said: “Although these further changes will not remove the peak time queue from the majority of Balshaw Lane.

“They should prevent the queue from extending onto the A49 Wigan Road and Dawbers Lane.”

“The removal of the hatch road markings next to the junction with Westway will be welcomed by many has this should result in lessening the current queues that occur along Westway up to the Chancery Road junction in Astley Village.”
