Tragic Chorley woman is inspired by 'Calendar Girls'

A woman who lost her husband and father to cancer in the space of a few months has produced a risque calendar after deciding to direct her grief into something positive.

Janice Miller, 54, from Chorley, had the inspiration to produce the ‘Calendar Girls’ photo shoot style after watching the film of the same name.

Early 2012 was a period of untold tragedy for Janice when her fiance John, 65 was diagnosed with cancer.

The couple, who had planned a summer wedding, brought forward their big day to February.

Just 10 days before the wedding, Janice’s dad Alan died from prostate cancer at the age of 84.

John lost his own battle with cancer just three months after the couple married.

Janice said: “I lost two people I loved so much in just weeks, it made the grieving process very hard.

“Losing John was devastating as we only found each other later in life.”

Janice and her daughter Rachel started fundraising for cancer charities in memory of the men last year.

And then came the inspiration to do a calendar.

Janice said: “One of the characters who dies of cancer in the film, is also called John and was a keen birdwatcher, just like my John.

“I posted on-line about doing a calendar and got 39 replies overnight. There are both men and women and everyone taking part either has cancer, has survived cancer or has lost someone to cancer.

Photographers Sharon Coupe and Gill Arrowsmith gave their services for free and Janice herself did a semi-nude shot wearing nothing but boots and a rucksack. The money raised will go to Breast Cancer Awareness and an oesophageal cancer charity. The calendars will be on sale in November for £6 each at outlets including Harlequin Flowers, Woodchats Coffee Shop, Sue’s bookstall, Stove Store, Friday Street and an occasional stall on Chorley Covered Market.
