Bring back our flowers call

SHOPPERS and traders are calling for flowers to be returned to Darwen market square.

Tiered flower tubs were moved from outside the town hall and outdoor market buildings a year ago when redevelopment work on the market square began - and council bosses say they are unsuitable.

Denise Gee, who runs D&D Fruit and Veg stall on the three-day market, said: "We call the market square the beach because when it's dry it's all nice and sandy coloured, but there's nothing there.

"We want to see some hanging baskets and planters because the square is too cold and too harsh the way it is.

"We need some colour in this town.

"There used to be big, square planters in front of the town hall and the market, and going back a few more years, there were beautiful hanging baskets.

"If they're worried about vandalism, then why not have baskets hanging from buildings around the place?

"Rossendale Council are bringing flowers back into their public areas because they've realised that by having none, it looks negative and doesn't show prosperity."

A spokesperson for Rossendale Council confirmed this and said: "As part of our annual budget setting process we are looking at a number of measures to help to reinvigorate Pride in Rossendale. These include extra funding for hanging baskets, floral displays, bins and street furniture."

Another stall holder on the three-day market, who did not want to be named, said: "Our baskets are now at the services at junction four of the M65. They look nice there, but they looked better on our square.

"The tubs have been gone about 12 months and it's very barren without them.

"They want to make it a historic market town, well they need to get some investment in this sort of thing."

Moves to brighten up the town centre are among the aims of the Lancashire Telegraph's We're Backing Darwen campaign, which has called for the formation of a town council to give people more of a say in the running fo the town and increased investment.

Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: "The tiered plant pots are not appropriate for the new modern market square design. They are more suitable for areas which need brightening up or older streets.

"We are planting shrubs and trees in the area, which are more in keeping with the current market square design. The area has been designed as a whole, with landscaping in mind."

But Sharon Allen from Darwen, who visits the market regularly, disagrees that tiered pots are unsuitable.

She said: "They used to look nice in the tubs. I think we need more of them to make the place brighter.

"The only worry is that blind people might find them an obstacle."

Where is the voice of For Darwen, too busy taking money off poor workers and giving it to rich Directors.
They are a disgrace, have made a lot of noise but just join forces with the Tories and Lib Dems.

Shame on them, they promised something dofferent but gave worse of the same

How will the formation of a Town Council lead to increased investment? Surely that will just lead to an increase in council tax (precept) for Darwen residents to enjoy another tier of government for very very little in return.

In reality the council want it to look a little better driving to BLACKBURN from the motorway. Mr Cottam; what exactly are we going to get to brighten up the area ? something chrome and wood which is easy to vandalise or perhaps some 'modern art' ( a couple of pieces of scrap metal welded into the shape of a bee, sponsored by Frank Barnes !!)

Firstly, the tiered planters will not look right in the modern theme. Secondly, i would challenge anyone to create colour at this time of year. Thirdly, whether we have flowers or not is irrelevant until we have quality and varied retailers investing in the town and attracting people. To me, this is the biggest worry. In my opinion, the centre now looks far better, but if i wanted a pair of shoes, a shirt, book or DVD, I am scuppered. If your fancy is cheap frozen food, charity shops and kebabs, Darwen is the place for you!

I had the opportunity to tackle Councllor Rigby personally about the tubs. His reason for not bringing them back was because of maintenance costs!! Talking to a local shopkeeper the other day she remarked "Have you seen the new trees "they" have planted? The trees will be vandalised like the last lot" I asked about the cameras - are they active? What response do we get from them? Nobody answers that question. Is it a secret that they don't work? I think in the absence of the tubs, hanging baskets would look splendid. I used to drive through Gatley, Near Manchester airport and they always have a lovely display hanging from the lamp posts. Let's do it here!!

You are lucky to have had the opportunity to talk to Colin Rigby. A number of readers have asked him, Foster and Melia to talk about not only the flowerpots but their cheating Councillor, cutting wages of the lowest paid in the Council and giving people you earn over 100000 a 10% increase, the leaky roof at Darwen Market, the lack of heating in the market, the very dim Christmas lights in Darwen. What do we get but a stony silence. The only time there is a comment from Rigby it is a statement prepared by one of the Officers he has just given a 10% increase to. Rigby, Foster and Melia should be held to account for the mess they are making.

Bring our flower planter tubs back from the motorway exit at the bondary. We were told these were being put there temporary until the alterations to Darwen Town Centre are complete. The council must be maintaining them there so why cant they maintain them in Darwen where they belong!

How sad that they took the flowers away too. The market was always my favourite place when I was a little girl. Remember those litle shops in the wall under the road? Hope you get your flowers back. Off topic here...does anyone have a copy of the Darwen Market rules? I am trying to open a similar thing here in rural NYS and would be interested in seeing how the market is run on a day-to-day basis. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it.
