POLITICIANS have slammed the decision to axe 24 East Lancashire post offices and claimed bosses had 'no intention' of listening to people's concerns.

Today's announcement that branches earmarked for closure would not get a reprieve prompted anger among those who had campaigned against plans to shut them.

Despite receiving around 3,000 responses and attending 23 meetings with customers during the six-week consultation period, the Post Office chose to go ahead with the cutbacks in the face of mass opposition.

The decision came after bosses said they felt petitions "carried no real weight".

The Lancashire Telegraph had run a Save Our Post Office Campaign and we handed over petitions with 1,500 signatures.

MPs said the decision to forge ahead with the closures showed that the consultation process - which began on January 22 - had been 'a pointless' exercise.

Pendle Labour MP, Gordon Prentice, expressed his disgust at the announcement.

Mr Prentice, who voted against his government in a commons motion brought by the Conservatives calling for the closure programme to be scrapped, said: "I wanted to see a continuing subsidy for our Post Office branches with the amount publicised locally so people would feel an obligation to use their local branch."

Nigel Evans, Conservative MP for Ribble Valley, said: "Even after the consultation period nothing seems to have changed, but I will fight to try and save our rural post offices.

"We are now going to look at ways we can appeal against the closures."

Other East Lancashire Labour MPs were criticised last month for either abstaining or voting against the Conservative's proposal, despite speaking out against the closures locally.

But Greg Pope, Labour MP for Hyndburn, who voted with the government, said the decision to close the branch in Longshoot, Haslingden, was particularly unwarranted.

He said: "I am bitterly disappointed and outraged about the closure of Longshoot.

"I had a petition with 804 names on it campaigning against the closure, yet the Post Office claimed there were few responses. They did not listen to our concerns.

"I don't think the consultation has been properly conducted."

Burnley MP Kitty Ussher, who abstained from the vote, said: "I am very disappointed that Post Office bosses have made this decision. I believe that working together with the affected communities we put forward a very strong case to retain those Post Office branches."

" I do not think that on this occasion they have listened and they have not adequately answered all my concerns. I believe we have strong grounds for appeal in at least three cases and I will review the others."

Richard Lynds, Post Office Ltd's Network development manager north west, said the decision to close the branches had not been taken lightly.

He said: "We have considered very carefully all the comments made during the public consultation."

In total, 56 branches have been axed across Lancashire, Fylde and Southport as the Government seeks to stave off losses of £4m-a-week on the network.

How many thousands of local people will be impacted by these closures - it's appalling! Where can we see a full list of the 24 East Lancs post offices that are definitely being axed??

Your columnist Harry Nuttall wrote a few weeks back: 'My favourite bit of jargon is "consultation". The object here is to give the impression that what we think matters to them and that it might actually make a difference .' Spot on Harry.

I'm very angry with this Government and PO as they had NO intention of saving any Post Offices, all they are concerned about is to save money so they can get there very Big Bonus. I also hope that those MP's who said they wanted to save PO's in there constituents, I hope that at the next Election they get VOTED out.

As someone who worked for Royal Mail for 27 years, I can tell you that the management had no intention of listening to any protests about the closure of Post Offices. They will go ahead regardless of what local people want.

Maybe Steve but I'm not saying they are not being cynical, what I find more cynical is local politicians saying "save this" when they know that it is unsustainable. That's why I say if they care so much about the "local social hub," thing, when the truth is those days have gone in Post office terms, maybe they should put up their own ideas rather than pretend about the Post Offices....

In the same respect I don't see what the issue is about supporting a NATIONAL policy that is making the PO network less of a tax burden on me, but wanting LOCAL services to reflect local opinion. I don't see any MP saying they want all their POs to stay open, i mean when soem have liek 10 customers a week how coudl they, but they surely can make a local case on a national policy, there is no contradiction, only for those who want there to be to support their own points.

And that goes for myself (and when did I say I support Labour?) I understand that the numbers using Post Offices are reducing and it is certainly not indefensible to say that the network is too big for the modern day. Its a fact. What I do have an issue with is whether the PO really does listen to local concerns or whetehr it has made up its mind, and I'm afraid even though I understand the need for network change, I doubt they really have listened, but that is not the MPs fault really.

Where are the comments from Janet Anderson? I thought she would be saying that it is excellent news and shows how Gordon and his gang are listening to the people.

and then completely ignored them; profit before people. Oh, by the way stamps go up next week to create extra profit for fatcat bosses.

Your words are hollow turncoat ! MP's are supposed to represent the will of the people not feather their own nests. I wonder if all those who voted with the Government/Dictators
hip get double the expenses for having two faces ?

Steve G you are right, people get what they deserve but not the MPs. If people actually used these "vital local services" then we wouldn't be in this position.

Fact is too, that the LT must be the only paper in the world now not to have read the debate in Parliament in which the Tories failed to say they wouldn't close any Post Offices and actually said they'd cut the PO subsidy.

I'm all for saving good Post Offices but I refuse to pay for bad ones. If that cuts a 'local community hub' then why don't you ask your coucils to provide it in another way, they have been vocal enough about it, maybe a nice community drop in centre is better than a smelly old shop for such things, but hey local councillors can't be expected to provide local services can they?? And given most are Lib Dem or Tory, here's their chance to put thier money where their mouth is.

People get what they deserve. Look at the antics of Straw & Anderson... pretending to support the local post offices, but voting FOR their closure in parliament. The reason this happens will be apparent at the next election 'cause you can guarantee now that they will both be re-elected. You could put a red rosette on a chimpanzee in these parts and it would still get elected & Straw and Anderson know it. That's why they can toe the party line and stick two fingers up to their constituents safe in the knowledge that their seat on the gravy train is assured. If people want to stop this from happening, try considering changing your vote to another party for once instead of blindly putting your cross against the same name/party time after time (unless you believe they're all the same anyway, in which case please don't bother voting at all).

Why do we put up with this? In France they protest in the streets and people take note. I think we need to take a hard line on these issues. Decisions such as this and the nonsense regarding blue light services in Burnley and Blackburn affect large sections of the community. Namely those who fought for us during the War. There is room in this country for a Common Sense political party and the sooner the better. There must be wealthy working class businessmen out there who could finance such a party. There would certainly be no shortage of support.
