5:26pm Sunday 11th July 2010 in Pennine Lancashire 10K run
By Kate Turner, Reporter
RUNNERS young and old turned out in force today to take part in the first Jane Tomlinson Pennine Lancashire 10K.
Dull weather didn’t dampen the spirits as more than a thousand competitors took part in the biggest event of its kind in East Lancashire.
The race, which started at Witton Park, featured a mix of skilled and fun runners.
Running legend Ron Hill started the race with BBC Radio Lancashire presenter Graham Liver, former Hull City manager Iain Dowie, ex-Blackburn Rovers star Tony Parkes and Michelin star chef Nigel Haworth, who was celebrating his 52nd birthday.
The Jane Tomlinson Pennine Lancashire 10K is a Run For All event, set up by the late Jane Tomlinson and her family.
Race organiser Mike Tomlinson said: “Nearly 2,000 people entered the race which is a good turn out for the first in the region.
"We hope that if the hospices have found they have raised enough funds that we will be able to put it on again next year.”
The men’s winner was Lee Cook who finished in 35.46mins while the women’s winner was Gwen Kinloch who completed it in 42.11mins.
Iain Dowie finished in 46.41mins, Ron Hill finished in 53.58mins and Nigel Howarth in 1hr 10mins.

i think it is great to have these events. its good for the town. however, why were there no diversion signs out on the roads? it was hell trying to get to witton area. just road closed signs. the stewards were useless too.
.

Getting about was indeed a nightmare in the Witton area. My road was totally sealed off and no-one could not get out at all. When I got a phone call from my brother saying that he was ill and could not find his insullin, I had to drive onto the pavement to get past the cones and signs at the end of the road. Onto redlam and again mount the pavement to get onto Garden St and then navigate a path to his house amidst queues of irate and bemused drivers. A five minute car journey took me 15. Luckily my brother was OK but it could have easiy went the other way. Im sure that other care workers and ambulances struggled to get to the elderly and sick on Sunday too. One of the staff assured me that the public had been informed well in advance? Well no-one informed me or anybody on my street or indeed anybody I know! I am sure that the race would have been just as successful if, the route had been better thought out and its effects on the safety of others had been taken into consideration.
