East Lancs runners urged to sport soccer shirts in 10k race

ORGANISERS of a huge charity run in Blackburn this summer are urging competitors to take part wearing football shirts.

The event takes place on the morning of the World Cup final and bosses hope that fans will get into the soccer spirit and don their favourite kits.

Some are even set to take part in the first-ever Jane Tomlinson Pennine Lancashire 10K wearing the shirts of their rivals, in a bid to attract more sponsorship.

Rovers fan Gareth Warburton has decided to put to bed historic rivalries and, in the name of charity, do the unthinkable.

He’s swapping his beloved blue and white Rovers strip for rival Burnley FC’s claret and blue.

On July 11, Gareth, a friend of event founders the Tomlinson family, will fundraise by wearing the colours of Burnley supporter Steven Tomlinson.

Mike Tomlinson said: “The Pennine Lancashire 10K is about having fun in the name of charity.

“We’ve already got the support of clubs across the region and it would be great to see fans joining the start line in their favourite club, or national colours.

“They could even follow in Gareth’s bold footsteps and make a football foe a friend and, just for the 10K, swap shirts with a rival supporter.”
