Suspended sentences for East Lancs men who abducted teens

SUSPENDED JAIL SENTENCES: Azeem Shah, SUSPENDED JAIL SENTENCES: Azeem Shah,

A JUDGE has blasted two cousins who took three young girls from the streets of East Lancashire, plied them with drink and drove them 20 miles to a hotel.

Azeem and Tabassum Shah were only caught out when an eagle-eyed night manager at Darwen Travelodge became suspicious about the age of one of the girls and alerted police, Burnley Crown Court was told.

The pair, from Vernon Street and Railway Street, Nelson, respectively, admitted abduc-ting the three girls, aged 14 and 15, in August last year.

Police say there was evidence that the two men and three girls, taken from the streets of Nelson, had all been drinking.

Another charge of engaging in sexual activity, relating to Azeem Shah and involving one of the girls, was allowed to lie on the file by Judge Simon Newell.

Both were given a 12 month prison sentence, suspended for two years. They must carry out 200 hours community service and observe a four-month curfew, between 8pm and 6am.

Lawyers representing Taba-ssum Shah, 24, claimed the father-of-two had not had sex with any of the girls on the night in question. But the judge criticised the two men and labelled them a danger to young women in passing sentence.

Judge Newell said “They were interested in them because they were young and attractive girls.

“I come to the conclusion that there continues to be a risk to young females from you and people such as yourselves who may cruise the town looking for such young women,” he said.

Francis Nance, prosecuting, said the girls had been abducted at around 8pm and were discovered around 1.30am.

The investigation was mounted by the Operation Engage team, which monitors offences of grooming and underage sex across East Lancashire.

Supported by the Lancashire Telegraph's Keep Them Safe campaign, the operation highlights dangers posed by older men who befriend and exploit younger women for sexual purposes.

Ooh, doesn't this give you enormous faith in the judicial system?

Well, when I say 'faith', I mean 'despair'.

Well, when I say 'despair' what I actually mean is this gives you total and complete contempt for such a pathetic 'sentence' that in no way reflects the severity of the crime and fatally undermines the credibility of such a legal system.

About a month ago, the court had passed a pre-sentence ruling on this case and had informed both men that they would face a suspended sentence or community service! You've got to think that this was some way of ensuring the public became familiar with the likely sentencing in this specific case.

If that's fair, then I am Johann Cryuff, the former Dutch footballer.

What? WHAT? W-H-A-T?!?!?!?

I have heard of and read about some disgraceful sentences handed down over the years but this one is utterly staggering!!!!!!!!!!

These men are absolute scum, they are a danger to young girls and they have been let off with absolutely nothing.

Just because they weren't caught 'in the act' is completely irrelevant - common sense tells anyone reading this story that these men had every intention of abusing these young girls.

I doubt VERY much that it was the first time they had acted in a similar way.

Why can't the justice system protect society from scum like this?

Why are people who, as the judge said, are a danger to young women let free to roam our streets?

They have been caught doing something that any normal and decent person finds repulsive and disgusting and they have been let off effectively scott free!!!

What on earth was the judge thinking about?!? How can he openly admit that these men ARE (current tense) a danger to young women and then let them walk out of court?!?

They haven't even been put on the Sex Offenders' Register!

These men and all like them strike fear into the heart of any parent, they are a nightmare for society and the court, by handing down a pathetic sentence, has just told them that society permits their behaviour and that in the future, others will not be punished for similar offences.

I FEAR for our society when we have little or no justice and absolutely NO common sense!!!!

What a donkey the law is. Might as well have sent them to Butlins for a fortnight. Their crimes are dispicable and they continue to be a threat to the public as outlined byt he Judge " “I come to the conclusion that there continues to be a risk to young females from you and people such as yourselves who may cruise the town looking for such young women,” he said". Yet he give them such a soft sentence that he too should hang his head in shame.

Irrelevent of their ethnicity the crime of grooming young girls for sex is a crime on the rise and until the judiciary impose the required sentence and set an example to these scums they will continue to flaunt the law and cause harm and destroy young lives.

Whilst I agree this is a disgraceful travesty of justice, one should ask why was the sentance so lenient and were these children taken forcefully, or willingly. Also I read that they were "discovered" by the police at 1.30 am. Had they been reported as "missing" by their parents by this time; or were these 14 year olds regularly out and about the town after midnight with parental consent?A full, rounded report from the Telegraph would be appreciated.

I do not know the details in this case (only what has been reported in the Telegraph) but I guess they were not placed on the Sex Offender's Register because 'abduction' is not a sexual offence (many have been abducted throughout history for very different motives than to commit sexual offences). Furthermore, it is dangerous turning this into a race issue - children from all faiths and cultures are abused. You only need to look at the Catholic Churches' handling of their sexual abuse scandals!!

leelancs says...
9:03am Sun 6 Jun 10

Just to add to my earlier comment, a definition of abduction is 'the wrongful, and usually the forcible carrying off of a human being'. The motivation for this act could be sexual (as is apparent in this case) but there are many others - punishment for drug debts, to inflict violence, taking children in parental custody battles, etc. Abduction is therefore not a sexual offence in itself (although clearly there can be a sexual motive). In order to sign on the Sex Offenders Register an offender has to have been convicted of a sexual offence as defined in the legislation (such as indecency with a child, rape, etc).
-
As it states in the article above 'another charge of engaging in sexual activity, relating to Azeem Shah and involving one of the girls, was allowed to lie on the file by Judge Simon Newell'. This means he was not conviced of a sexual offence. If he had have been convicted of this offence, he would have been subject to registration.
-
Before anyone has a go at me for this. it is purely my understanding of the legal position - I'm not offering a view whether I agree with it or not!!

In fact, all I said was that there is a problem with a certain section of our community with regards to the grooming of under-aged, vulnerable white girls for sex.

Now I know some people would rather brush the whole issue under the carpet, but for a newspaper to be complicit in hiding the truth - well this beggars belief and you should hang your heads in shame.

Well, religion and culture HAS something to do with it. In the case of catholics and the other situations that you will identify , the predators and the victims were not of different religions.
In these cases, it is white underage non-muslim girls that are selected for abuse by Pakistani-heritage muslims. They do not use their 'own' girls in this way. Sorry to disillusion you, but there IS a culture element in this situation, as the facts show.

That is WHY it is the subject of an attempted mass media blackout and cover-up ( especially by the establishment BBC ) and inaction by government bodies because there is a racial element to it, which is politically inconvenient for the pro-multicultural powers that be.

Even the little players like this paper is a party to it. Haven't you noticed ?

Apparently the charge of rape wasn't pressed in order to save the young girls the stress of testifying in court. These adult male pimps deliberately sought out these girls and spun them a tale of there being a party. It isn't the first time and it won't be the last time that a youngster has phoned home and asked to stay overnight at a friend's house - it was unfortunate for these kids that they'd been preyed on by predators.

Free speech no longer exists in Britain - haven't you realised it yet ?

That is the primary purpose of the Race and Religious Hatred laws - to subdue and restrict your opinions. It also opeartes to force the media to censor views as they wish under the premise of 'legal reasons'.

The famous quote from a judge in court case against an individual making 'defamatory religious statements ' was , and you check this for yourself ....

How long have you been under the illusion that you have had free speech in the last 15 years ?

Compare these sentences with two other recently reported incidents in Darwen:

A man was arrested after a domestic. He spat at police officers and received a 10-month suspended sentence, 220 hrs unpaid work and £1200 fine.

Or the guy who punched someone on a karaoke stage after the guy had dedicated the song to the defendent's girlfriend. £235 fine, 180hrs community work. One drunken punch and even the judge admitted there was some provocation.

Yet two dangerous paedophiles get only 200hrs community work, a 12 month suspended sentence and a four-month curfew?????? No fine, no compensation or costs, no sex register...

What's going on with the judicary?

It is all very well for armchair commentators like yourself to state your opinions on this site, but what difference do you think YOU will make to anything in the world? Do you think anybody outside East Lancashire will even read your views?

Regardless of if you agree or not governments do have power and do not really represent the interests of the public at all and never have, or have you been asleep for the past 13 years?
