Rossendale man's blind faith makes scents
SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS: Dennis Freedman, owner of Essentially Natural company, with one of his products, a lemon and coriander deodorant
SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS: Dennis Freedman, owner of Essentially Natural company, with one of his products, a lemon and coriander deodorant

A BUSINESSMAN who makes his own toiletries has launched a new range of organic products.

Dennis Freedman, 58, who is registered blind, runs his business from his home in Irwell Vale and is now looking for local outlets to sell his goods.

Until now, Essentially Natural, which makes products using only natural ingredients with no added chemicals or preservatives, have only been available on the internet.

Former teacher and jazz musician, Dennis, said his beauty products were made using ancient and traditional methods, embracing pure essential oils and organic ingredients.

Now he has created a new range of products including soaps, toners, moisturisers, tonics, balms and shaving products which are wrapped in recycled packaging.

He said: "Rather than a visual approch we manufacturers tend to go for, I base my products on smell using essential oils.

"Because I am blind I suppose my senses are more heightened, certainly my hearing is and my smell is more developed that a sighted person's would be.

"Because I don't have the other distractions I can focus on how the products smell.

"I always wanted to go into perfume-making but there wasn't the opportunity available."

He said his products were completely organic. Dennis added: "They are the way ahead in helping towards cleaning up our planet's carbon footprint and eco-system.

"We grow our own organic lavender and rosemary - all the plants we use in the products - and we get our other ingredients from certified organic growers.

"We've got new packaging too which is being made in Burnley.

"We converted cellars at The Old Mill Social Club to use as a workshop but we are hoping to move into an industrial unit as the business expands.

"We do supply products to Fitzpatricks in Bank Street but now we are looking for local outlets to sell these products.

Dennis has come up with 20 new products including lime and lavender shaving foam, cucumber and almond scrub soap and hemp and petulia soap.

He added: "They are all natural and very affordable. They contain no chemicals so they are great for sensitive skin.

"We've also made soya aromatherapy candles which are great for the environment because they don't contain petroleum which gives off toxins."
