The first programme announcement from The National Festival of Making, taking place in Blackburn town centre on Sat 6 – Sun 7 May 2017 has been made! All of the workshops, activities and ‘have a go’ drop-in events confirmed so far have been published at http://festivalofmaking.co.uk/news/first-events-announced

The first ever, FREE family festival to celebrate making and manufacturing offers visitors of all ages inspiring opportunities to try things they’ve never tried before, from using industrial techniques to make a perfect paper plane to making their first stitch with a sewing machine.  From the famous King George’s Hall to the hi-tech Making Rooms, the town comes alive with artists, designers and manufacturers waiting to pass on their skills and expertise in a fun and friendly way.  A community-made quilt and a giant, retro video games screen form just two of the highlights.

Elena Gifford, Co-Director of The Festival of Making, says: “One of the main aims of The National Festival of Making is to inspire people to find out what aspects of making they could be good at and enjoy by having a go themselves. The range of workshops with now confirmed, with more to follow, shows that there’s going to be something in the festival experience for everyone.”

Developed by a new Festival of Making Community Interest Company - a collaborative venture involving designer, Wayne Hemingway MBE, festival producers, Deco Publique and creative place-making social enterprise, Placeshakers the festival happens at the heart of the Northern Powerhouse, just an hour away from Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool. The festival programme brings innovative art installations, live performance and markets promoting handmade products, including fine foods and craft ales to the town centre over two exciting day, creating a vibrant celebration of British making. People of all ages will see, hear, taste and take part in things they’ll encounter nowhere else.
