FUTURE? The planned Tesco store
D-DAY will arrive next week to resolve the protracted ‘supermarket wars’ in and around Barnoldswick town centre.
Mixed fortunes have greeted the backers of three separate applications lodged to construct new West Craven stores.
Town centre traders have marshalled their opposition to Tesco ’s plans to build on the site of L&P Springs at the corner of Wellhouse Road and Skipton Road.
But there has also been a Facebook campaign in support of the venture, which it is said would generate 175 jobs.
This has been recommended by planning officers for referral to the Communities Secretary – on the basis that it is acceptable to councillors.
The later bid by Aldi to secure 1,472 square metre premises at Skipton Road Business Park, should be given a straight approval, according to the same department. However, Capital and Centric plc’s plans, in partnership with Albert Hartley Ltd for the latter firm’s Crownest Mill site, also in Skipton Road, has been earmarked for refusal.
Chris Soper, an Albert Hartley director, said: “I just hope that the members of the planning committee can see the wider benefits that the Albert Hartley proposal provides and that they will look favourably on this proposal so we can work towards keeping a 100-year old business operating in Barnoldswick.”
Bosses have insisted that the existing mill is in a ‘dire condition’ and the investment created by the supermarket proposals will help to develop a new headquarters nearby. Otherwise, it is claimed, the company may have to relocate.
Another submission has been received from the Co-operative Group, which has its own town centre store, asking for all three applications to be refused, as it would harm the vitality and viability of traders in Barnoldswick.
The final decision on the three applications will be taken at a meeting of West Craven area committee on Monday from 6pm at the Rolls-Royce Club in Barnoldswick.

Jesus H, with people this blinkered there's no hope for thwarting supermarket domination.

I simply stated that the video was good and what it entailed, not at any time did I refer to my own opinion.

Everybody knows what Albert Hartley means to Barnoldswick and, forgetting what might happen (RE a new supermarket), the fact of the matter is that Hartley still needs fresh investment.
Now, if you're asking me if a supermarket should be built on the site that may be sold, then I would have considerable doubts. I don't know enough of the detail to be able to comment but I guess like most people who don't really know the ins and outs of it all, I just hope the factory gets the investment it needs at little cost to the area.
