Hapton IT firm eyes expansion

AN IT firm plans to create new jobs this year after tying up deals with some of the world’s biggest computer firms.

Lanway, based at the Network 65 business park in Hapton, has prestigious Microsoft ‘gold partner’ status and was recently named an approved repair centre by US giant Hewlett Packard.

Now, after making seven redundancies during the recession, the company, which offers IT packages to schools and businesses, says it is ready to grow again.

Managing director Steve Ackers said 2010 could see as many as new 10 recruits.

He said: “I see this year being very positive for us and I foresee us taking on new people.

“We have got areas of the business that we need to grow, such as the technical side, and we will look to fill those areas.

“Microsoft see us as a key partner in the UK and that is very important to our future.”

Lanway was founded by Mr Ackers in 1986 as a technology store in Brierfield which soon had sister outlets in Burnley and Blackburn.

However, its huge growth did not begin until a £1million move to Network 65 in 2000 and a concentration on kitting out schools and businesses with computers.

Since then, Lanway has grown every year and now employs 70 with a turnover of £15million.

However, Mr Ackers puts his firm’s success in the past decade down to Lanway’s shirt sponsorship of Burnley FC between 2001 and 2004.

He said: “During that time, we tripled in size because before that we were just known as the company that ran computer shops in town centres.

“But sponsoring Burnley got us in the papers and we got our name out there.”

In recent years, Lanway has opened an office in Bracknell, Berkshire, to give it a South of England base, and now advises other firms on IT solutions.

It all makes optimistic Mr Ackers positive about the future

So, 7 losses last year, and possibly, maybe, hypothetically it might make up to 10 new jobs this year. So at the very best a gain of 3 jobs in 2 years?! Possibly! Maybe?!

Slow news day?

Fred, sausage by name eh?

Lanway has done a fantastic job on making sure they can keep as many people on as possible as not to suffer MASS losses in jobs which is more than can be said of many many others. And still being in economic gloom, to be able to envisige taking on more staff is a testament to this company's commendable trait..Good old British spirit of grit & determination.

Very few computer firms survived with the rapid evolution in IT technology and the once fatally problematic issue of cross compatibility. Hundreds of firms went down in Britain & the US were quick to do what they do best, take over when someone has already spent money on development and then swoop in to make it their own. Your comment sounds like one of someone who has a huge chip on their shoulder, perhaps one of the 7 who lost their job? Just be happy that the MD had the intelligence to minimise his losses and manage to come out the other end with smiles all around.

Fred, I have people who come to me with problems of their businesses shutting down aswell as the unfortunate folk who have been made redundant. I can tell you from experience too, having ran my own business, is that the biggest thing an MD worries about is having to make his staff redundant because of reduced revenue. Another 1,200 jobs that are collectively from hundreds of SME's in lancs alone have been lost in the past 2 months.

They didn't just need to able to shift PC's & perephirals, they needed the think smart & think ahead. Without this adaptive way of thinking, a forward thinking company like this would survive and would have died with the others. They've gone from strength to strength and I would help in anyway in making sure Lanway & such others keep our Rurally perceived towns ahaed of the times and provide 21st century work opportunities to our young generations coming through the ranks. Well done Lanway for keeping your heads above water and even steer yourselves back into expansion during a time when others are still handing their staff their P45's.
