BLACKBURN is one of the country’s leading towns for home-based businesses, research has revealed.
It is in the top 100 nationally for companies run from home, ranking above nearby towns including Blackpool and Wigan.
The survey, sponsored by BT, calls for more support to be offered to home-based firms, including Government grants.
Report author Emma Jones said cash injections should be awarded according to earnings, not growth in the number of employees.
She added: “Basing a business at home is certainly no obstacle to growth as home business owners are making the most of technology to outsource work and collaborate with other talented minds.
“It’s a most modern way to grow, yet it is not recognised in business support programmes and policy.”
Elsewhere in the list, Manchester came fourth, Liverpool ninth, Bolton 45th and Preston was placed 48th.
