ENTERPRISE workers in Darwen are celebrating after the much-delayed opening of a hub for start-up and small businesses.

'Work at Over Darwen House' in Railway Road was first due to open in January but hit trouble when workmen found damp areas in parts of the building.

Tenants were then due to move in on May 1, with a launch party planned for three weeks later, but those plans also had to be put back.

But now the centre, in the unit where the Co-op Bank used to be, has finally opened its doors.

Building manager Samantha Taylor admitted the project had been 'a challenge at times' but said there were 'exciting times ahead'.

She said: "We're finally open and ready to support businesses on their growth journey.

"Now that we have officially opened we wanted to take a moment to thank everyone that has helped us transform the old bank into a fantastic business growth hub and co-working space.

"The results exceed all expectations."

The hub offers flexible work space for budding entrepreneurs who are looking to start or advance their businesses.

A team of seven experts in a variety of areas is on hand to offer support to tenants.

Project leader Katherine Lucarz said: “There has been exceptionally hard work by everybody involved.

“We have really spent 12 months building the community. It has been an exceptional journey."

The initiative by the Livesey Foundation, which is also behind the Darwen Heritage Centre at Holker House, was created to support business growth and job creation in the town.

The hub has nine private offices. Applications have exceeded official capacity but it is hoped that all interested parties will be accommodated in some way.

A spokesman for Work at Over Darwen House statement said: "This is more than just a place of work. Members have access to work opportunities, business support and a network ready to help.

"A team of volunteer business experts responds to the challenges of new and growing businesses, developing a support package that is continuously evolving for maximum impact.

"This is a completely not-for-profit initiative."
