A RURAL hotel and restaurant in the Ribble Valley has been named as one of the best places to work in Britain.

The Gibbon Bridge Hotel in Chipping, beat off 1000s of businesses across the UK and was placed fifth in a competition ran by business magazine, The Caterer.

The hotel set up in 1982 was the highest ranked business in the north west and the only one in East Lancashire picked in the top 30.

The 23-acre grounds in Green Lane was set up by Margaret Simpson and daughter Janet Simpson, and was converted from the family barn, which had been in the family for generations.

Ms Janet Simpson said being the highest placed hotel in the region is fantastic for everyone involved with the business.

She said: "It is wonderful that we have been recognised among some of the largest and most prestigious players in the United Kingdom.

"One of the most important aspects of staffing is ensuring that everyone feels valued at all levels.

"Our ethos has been to create a community and family feel throughout the team.

"Large or small, independent or international, successful hospitality businesses today all have one thing in common, they never ignore the welfare of their staff.

"I don't have much family left and my staff, which some of them have worked here since the beginning, have become family to me."

The hotel scored a performance rating of 88 per cent, and was given a 90 per cent rating for creating a friendly and productive environment to work in.

A spokesman from the judging team said: "Gibbon Bridge's management team focuses on work-life balance, fair pay and career progression for staff.

"Thought for instance, has been given to the staff living accommodation which is located in the beautiful grounds around a picturesque pond in a peaceful part of the estate.

"All the amenities they need are provided, along with gym facilities and bikes.

"Three means a day and laundry facilities are available at a minimal charge, even when staff are on a day off."
