A BURNLEY broker is bidding a fond farewell to a family firm where he has spent more than a decade of his career in finance.

John Westmoreland, 60, is set to retire from Burnley-based Financial Affairs, an insurance and financial services company based on Standish Street.

After spending the past 12 years as financial services manager, John marked his retirement with a celebratory lunch at Nino’s in Cliviger alongside 12 colleagues and wife Janet.

He was joined at the lunch by Michael and Pamela O’Connor, who set up the company in 1972 before handing over to sons Laurence and Gavin three years ago.

John embarked on his financial career at Lloyds after leaving school, which was followed by stints at Wesleyan, United Friendly and MGA Brokers.

John, who lives near Towneley Park, said: “The past 12 years have been a joy – Financial Affairs is a family company and that’s the feeling you get.”

John’s retirement plans include walking his two cocker spaniels and being taught to play the piano by his music teacher wife Janet.

He added: “I’m up to two miles a day with the dogs and page 14 of my piano book.”

Laurence O’Connor, managing director of Financial Affairs, said: “We are sad to see John go and thank him enormously for his time with us. I started out at the company as John’s assistant and he’s been a huge asset to the business over the past 12 years.

“On behalf of my parents, my brother and all of our employees, I wish him lots of luck and happiness for the future.”
