Council to sell cottages in Brierfield

A ROW of five cottages on the main road through Brierfield are set to be sold off by Pendle Council.

The properties, in Burnley Road, were originally bought for improvement as part of the Housing Market Renewal (HMR) programme.

But the ending of the HMR programme has meant the funding was not available.

The council can now borrow the money through the Government’s New Homes Bonus scheme.

But because it is being borrowed it reduces the amount that can be spent on renovating the houses.

Matthew Pearson, home improvement manager at Pendle Council, said: “Following full internal and external inspections and structural reports, officers were concerned that the refurbishment costs required to bring these properties back into use would far exceed any possible capital we would receive from the subsequent sales.”

Following an appraisal process, it is now recommended that the council sells the properties as they are to a private developer.

Bearing in mind that it is Pendle BC that is trying to flog these houses this quote from a Pendle BC official could hardly be described as a good selling point.

That's the Public Sector for you. You can just imagine the meeting when they were discussing the issue........."If we can't sell them I suppose we can always give them away".
