Four Brierfield men charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice

FOUR men have been charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

The charges relate to a trial where three men were jailed for 48 years following a horrific attack on a man in Brierfield.

Shoaib Ahmed, 42, of Brooklyn Avenue, Manchester, Mohammed Mirza, 41, of New Hall Street, Burnley, and Mohammed Shazad Baig, 35, of St Georges Square, Burnley, have been charged with perjury and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Sufian Butt, 35, of Grey Street, Burnley, is just charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

All four men were arrested on Thursday morning and have been bailed to appear at Burnley Magistrates Court on Friday September 28.

In August Mohammed Nawaz, 44, of Hardy Avenue, Brierfield, Mohammed Javed, 41, of Hartington Street, Brierfield and Mohammed Arfan, 36, of Manchester Road, Nelson, were each jailed for 16 years for their part in the attack on the evening of Monday June 20.

Burnley Crown Court heard how the 39-year-old victim was repeatedly attacked with hammers, a knife and a hockey stick on Colne Road, Brierfield.

The man, who was left unconscious with serious injuries, was taken to hospital where he was treated for stab wounds, a fractured skull, a broken leg and puncture and slash wounds to his legs.
