Protest meeting over Colne housing estate plan

A PROTEST meeting against plans for 212 new homes in Colne will take place on Sunday.
Persimmon Homes this week submitted plans for the huge estate on land at Knotts Lane, Colne.
It will see former rail sidings and a patch of green land turned into 21 two-bedroom, 66 three- bedroom and 125 four-bed- room homes if the plans are given the green light.
But many residents nearby have expressed concerns at the development. One of the organisers of the meeting, who wished to be identified only as Cathy, said: “The concern is at the size of it.
“It is a big estate and it is a lot of homes to sell.
“A lot of the residents I have spoken to have big concerns and the meeting is to try to find the general feeling in the area.”
A spokesman for Persimmon Homes said in the application: “The former railway sidings are densely vegetated and provide a habitat to a number of species.
“The location of the scheme will allow habitat connectivity to the wider surrounding area.
“It also provides a wildlife viewing area for local residents.
“The children's play area in the middle of the site will provide a safe environment for children to play with equipment being provided. A pedestrian link is also being provided to Colne Primet High School which will provide an improved environment for the existing and future local children to walk to the local school.”
Sunday’s public meeting takes place at the Crown pub, in Albert Road, from 10am.
Residents will have until the end of September to make any comments on the plans and councillors will discuss the scheme before the end of the year.
