MP saddened by death of Todmorden Tory

AN MP has paid tribute to a Todmorden councillor who has lost his battle with cancer.

Retired businessman Ian Cooper represented the town for the Conservatives on Calderdale Council from 2008, the party’s first representative for 30 years.

But he had been battling cancer for the best part of the last decade and died surrounded by family and friends. Mr Cooper, left, lost his Todmorden seat at the May elections but was still a town councillor and chairman of Todmorden’s town centre regeneration board.

Craig Whittaker, the Calder Valley Conservative MP, said he was “saddened” to learn of his party colleague’s death.

The funeral of Mr Cooper, of Old Hall Barn, Higher Eastwood, Todmorden, will take place at Park Wood, Elland, on Thursday from 12.45pm.
