Residents demand safety measures on Colne 'danger' road

MORE than 500 residents have demanded improved road safety measures on a stretch of East Lancashire road where a mother and her nine-year-old son were badly hurt.

Emma Matthews, 31, and her son Leighton Cawdrey are now recovering after being involved in a collision with a car on Skipton Road, Colne, while heading to Park Primary School last month.

And now neighbours of the A56 route have pleaded with highway bosses to site a zebra crossing closer to Russell Avenue.

Leighton’s grandfather Ronnie Cawdrey joined community campaigner Lesley Colbeck to support the request.

Mrs Colbeck told councillors that children coming down from the North Valley estate to Park Primary and Park High rarely looked when crossing Skipton Road.

“The amount of near misses we have had has been incredible. A lot of people in the local area feel that there’s a need for this,” she added.

Julie Wilson, another neighbour added: “My daughter was run over there last year. She was with a group of friends and there was a taxi parked up. And when they went to cross there was a car coming around the side.”

Coun Ann Kerrigan said that there had been more accidents along Skipton Road than were reflected in official statistics.

Coun Neil Butterworth added: “It is not a matter of if someone is going to get killed but when. We have heard about people getting knocked down but you never get to hear about the near misses.”

Councillors on the Colne area committee agreed to refer the matter to County Coun Mike Calvert, so a speed management study, including the siting of a zebra crossing, can be considered by a county traffic forum.

as a regular driver of a hgv i think we need to bring back tufty.im sick to death of kids and adults running out in front of cars and hgv,s.when you pip at them they just give you the V sign.maybe a fine for jay walking like in america brought accidents down by a massive amount there.always blame the road. if cars etc are badly parked get them towed away and fine the drivers simple.

Well said.
I am a regular driver on this stretch of road and it's unbelievable the amount of children/adults who run out infront of vehicles.
I often see children running around near the road who only look to be about 6/7yrs old with no parent in sight. There are cars parked in stupid places.
While in theory a zebra crossing sounds a good idea, people don't always take notice. I stopped at the zebra crossing a while back on Skipton Road to let an elderly lady cross while the idiot coming in the opposite direction nearly mowed her down.
Lot's of minor adjustments need to be made for this road to be safer.
Parent's supervising their young children near the road would be a good start.
