Kate Winslet's Titanic dress to go on display in Colne

AN iconic piece of modern film history is set to take pride of place at an East Lancashire museum.

Nigel Hampson, curator of the Titanic In Lancashire Museum at Colne, has secured the dress worn by Kate Winslet in the 1999 film, where she stands at the ship’s bow with Leonardo Di Caprio and shouts: ‘I’m flying’.

The Church Street venue has been lent the dress, which has only been publicly shown on a handful of occasions previously, by memorabilia specialists White Star Memories.

Earlier this year the same firm brought a thought-provoking Titanic exhibition to Colne Muni, to mark the centenary of the tragedy.

Mr Hampson said: “I am absolutely delighted to be able to bring this wonderful piece of movie memoribilia to the museum.

“I am sure it will prove a big attraction and that people will love seeing it. This is an absolutely genuine item, not a mock up or recreation or copy, this is the real deal. It is a real coup for us to be able to have this here.”

The dress is made from crushed purple velvet and purple satin and came into the White Star Memories collection after props were sold off, after the shooting of the James Cameron film.

Mr Hampson says that the exhibit will be available at the museum, based in the Old Colne Grammar School, from early August.

Colne has long-standing links with the White Star liner through bandmaster Wallace Hartley, who grew up there and is buried in the town’s cemetery.

I know she's a big lass but to describe her dress as "titanic" seems a bit harsh.

In the centenary year of the biggest maritime disaster of the 20th century, after all the dignity of remembering those that died in the Titanic one of the country's main exhibitions, shows a piece of tat from a film that was so far removed from the real events of the tragedy that the film could have been named anything but Titanic, and people will turn up, possibly (no, actually) thinking Kate Winslett, REALLY survived the tragedy..........lol our uneducated young! and don't tell me the character she played was 'based on a real survivor' even if it's true, the whole story was a figment of Cameron's imagination.........
....he has since admitted he has got it all wrong, as portrayed in the film

"A piece of Tat" ???

The dress is a completely authentic replica, made from exactly the same materials and to original Edwardian patterns.

"a film that was so far removed from the real events of the tragedy"

So the most accurately made film about the Titanic disaster ever made, winner of 11 oscars and to this day the 2nd highest grossing movie of all time is "removed from the real events of the tragedy"?
This film illustrates in the most unique way how this disaster occurs. It shows the true horror facing the passengers and crew onboard as they have to endure this horriffic disaster. The love story between Leo and Kate is pure fiction of course, but dont dismiss the entire movie based on one section of the entire film.

"people will turn up, possibly (no, actually) thinking Kate Winslett, REALLY survived the tragedy..........lol our uneducated young"

How bitter and twisted you are!

I lecture on the Titanic disaster to many schools and groups and believe me, children particularly are very aware of the difference between fact and fiction. They understand totally that the Kate and Leo story is fiction, set into the telling of the Titanic story.

The movie does have a few errors - as just about any film does, but James Cameron certainly has not admitted "He got it all wrong"!

I bet your glass is always half empty too.............
