More spaces for disabled motorists across Burnley and Rossendale
EXTRA parking for disabled drivers is being created in 30 locations across Burnley and Rossendale amid a growing demand for spaces.
Some motorists are seeking exemptions for major routes such as Coal Clough Lane, Kiddrow Lane, Branch Road, Colne Road and Briercliffe Road.
But others are in more out-of-the-way locations such as Garden Street in Padiham, off St Matthew Street in Rosehill and Hind Street, Duke Bar.
Only one application has been received for the Rossendale valley, for a bay in Tonacliffe Road, Whitworth.
Richard Jones, the county council’s environment director, said in a report: “In this case the applicants have met all the requirements for the provision of a disabled parking bay and no objections have been received during the consultation process.”
He told councillors that the provision of the bays had been prompted by a ‘high demand for kerbside parking and the limited mobility of the applicants’.
Around £3,500 will be spent on establishing the dedicated bays, which will be met from the county council’s highway maintenance budget.
Another programme to improve highway safety along several key roads in Burnley has been rubberstamped by the authority.
No waiting restrictions have been approved for Briercliffe Road, near Netherwood Street, South Drive and Victoria Road in Padiham, and Brownside Road in Worsthorne.
Particular problems have also been noted with ‘obstructive parking’ in Pratt Street, Horton Avenue and part of Marsden Road, where similar measures will be introduced.

The fake disabled will take the spaces and the real disabled will continue to suffer.
Did you know a car obtained under the DLA/Mobility scheme is only insured when the disabled person is in the car or the one of the two authorised driver is driving the car for the direct benefit of the disabled person.
Maybe Mobility Scheme cars should have a tag on them because when BMW's are being driven at 2am with 5 youngsters in it, it is likely not to be on the business of the disabled person and technically uninsured at the time.

I think they refer to the individual spaces in front of people's homes where individuals ask for a reserved space to be marked out specially.
I don't really think that there is much of a problem with this type of space, although I do agree that the in town spaces are frequently abused.

I have very little time for disabled bays (due to abuse of the system) but do try to respect them for the times that someone is genuinely in need of one.
The major issue nowadays is that the government give out blue badges like dolly mixtures. I regularly see spry looking people entering and exiting cars displaying blue badges parking in designated bays and also pretty much where they like in high street. Its this behaviour and willingness to hand these permits out that makes people much more jaded and willing to park in these spots.
I am not saying that its right I am simply pointing out the cause. However despite the glut of badges and the blatant disregard with which some cars are parked, able people will always park in these spaces because they have no respect for each other any more and care only about themselves.
I think one of the most stupid things I have ever seen has to be at ASDA in Rawtenstall where they have about 30 motorbike spaces closer to the door than the disabled bays! Worse still they are always empty.
Parent and child spaces should be gone altogether, they are ridiculous and I park in them without a second thought. If some woman what's to bang out a load of kids that's up to them but don't expect to get preferential treatment. And to the people that will undoubtedly reply with "its better than them banging in to your doors", well people do that anyway! (see above about respect for others)
Bottom line is the government needs to get a grip of the badge system and stop handing them out to people who just like ramming cake in their face. Start prosecuting people who either abuse the badge or park in the spaces without one. Will they do this? No! And Why? Because a lot of lazy little piggies would have to get off their fat backsides and get a job, and that's a vote loser right there! So lets just throw some money at it that we can ill afford by painting up the streets and car parks with more stupidity.
