STUDENTS from Accrington & Rossendale College have taken over catering duties at one of East Lancashire’s most successful businesses.
The college has launched a partnership with bailiff firm Rossendales, which will see its hospitality and catering students get a taste of work at the enforcement and debt-collection agency’s Helmshore headquarters.
The unique project will involve two apprentices working at Rossendales’ catering facility full-time, in addition to students working at the business throughout their college course.
The college consulted with Rossendales to ensure the menu on offer will suit the needs of its 180 staff, with a large emphasis being put on fresh, healthy and nutritious options.
Liz Duncan, head of hospitality and catering at Accrington & Rossendale College, said: “Rossendales believe strongly in supporting the community and this innovative project gives our students a great opportunity to run their own large-scale catering facility.
“In addition, our learners will gain invaluable commercial work-experience.
“They will have to work at the pace of real chefs and deal with real customers and that can only strengthen their claims for employment when they graduate and begin looking for a job.”
Some of the food will be prepared at the college’s facility at the Globe Centre, while some will be prepared on site at Rossendales.
Julie Green-Jones, chairman of Rossendales, said: “We’ve always had a commitment to good, high quality training and the apprentices and students from the college will get the practical experience they need for their CVs.
“This is a solid way for Rossendales to make a contribution to the workforce of the future, which will be vital for all businesses.”
An architecture graduate, Sam Gilding from Leeds Metropolitan University, has also worked to revamp the canteen.
Since 2007 Rossendales’ local and central government work has grown by 55 per cent and its private sector jobs are up by 412 per cent. It collects more than £92million of debt on behalf of clients.

Heres an idea, pay your bills and you will never have to deal with Rossendales you cheap poor people!
An apprenticeship is all about offering a student a mix of a college education and real work experience at the same time. Yeah they are paid less but they get the education FREE! I am currently in full time work and paying over £1000 a year for education, I would be better off on an apprenticeship after I have paid everyone.
Quick to judge, even quicker to back down once the facts hit you in the face!

OK this firm might make a mistake occasionally but they are only working on information received. Are you seriously saying that people should be let off paying their way and let the rest of us pick up the tab, well forget it.Long may firms like this exist while people refuse to pay their way and expect society to dig then out of their own mess.At the end of the day citizens advice is there to help people out if they are wanting help.

If you pay your bills, you don't end up being faced with bailiffs - and Rossendale's is no worse than any of these firms. They're trying to give kids a decent education and getting a lot of stick for doing so. They're dammed if they do, they're dammed if they don't - whichever way, they loose.

I have had a very bad experience with these monsters after a mix up. I will never forget it. That ginger hag who I understand has now dyed her hair blonde goes around with her pet heavy is an evil coward bully. They forced their way in to my house after they got the police to knock on the door after she phoned them to say I had smashed my car into her van - which I hadn't. She phoned them on her mobile outside my house, shouting everything and making a big scene to embarrass me in front of my neighbours. Whilst shoving their way in, she headbutted my arm and threw herself to the ground shrieking that I had assaulted her. The policeman said 'sorry, I can't give you that one' as his face was right next to the action and he saw what she did, although he did effectively aid and abett these monsters. I asked him how he could allow this to happen and he simply smirked 'they didn't force their way in, they just stepped in'.
Filthy evil bailiffs, filthy lying cops.
Call it a successful business? It's not business, it's blood money taken from vulnerable people. I am amazed that Sherriff of Nottingham style tax collection tactics are still allowed in this day and age.
If that hag got run over by a bus in front of me, I wouldn't help her; I'd just point and laugh.
If someone pushed her under a bus, I'd just say 'she simply stepped in front of it'!!!
Why does the Telegraph keep glorifying these animals????
