Report: World Black Pudding Throwing Championships 2011

A competitor from “Down Under” has shown the English a thing or two by capturing the World Black Pudding championship title in Ramsbottom.

Around 700 contestants competed to dislodge the highest number of Yorkshire puddings from a 20ft high ledge by throwing three black puddings, supplied by Chadwicks of Bury.

And Warwick Turner, who comes from Australia’s Gold Coast, dislodged eight Yorkshire puddings from a 20ft-high ledge with one of his three black puddings to take the trophy and a £100 prize.

Windy conditions and showers hampered the throwing of many of those who took part in the annual event at The Royal Oak in Bridge Street.

More than 1,000 spectators supported the event, including an appearance by celebrity chefs The Hairy Bikers Davie Myers and Simon King who showed their competitive streak by taking part in the competition.

Co-organiser Lee Gosling, of the Stubbins Village Trust, said: “The Hairy Bikers were superb.

"At one point during the event, David Myers was in the lead with three.

"However, the competition proved to be a very tight tussle and eight proved to be the winning score for Warwick.

“We were very pleased with how everything went and around 700 people took part in the throwing itself, which was slightly less than last year.

"But we think that was to do with the weather.”

Other attractions included stalls, a farmers’ market and trampolines, with festivities continuing into the evening with the annual Pudstock musical event on the Royal Oak car park.
