Burnley woman hit by car on M65 'conscious'

THE Burnley woman hit by a car as she walked on the M65 on Saturday has regained consciousness.

But police said the 44-year-old, who was struck by a Toyota Avensis near junction 10, Burnley, remained in a critical but stable condition in Royal Preston Hospital’s intensive care department.

Officers have dismissed rumours that the woman had fallen, or been pushed from the bridge next to the Gannow Top roundabout.

They insisted that investigations suggested the woman had walked onto the motorway at around 3pm.

Several other vehicles had to swerve to avoid her during the incident and a section of the motorway was closed for three hours.

Police are investigating how and why she apparently either walked down the slip road to get to the motorway or a nearby embankment.

Following the collision the woman was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital by the North West Air Ambulance, which landed on the motorway in view of a crowd of people at the Gannow Top roundabout.

Inspector Mark Baines said: “Investigations suggest that she was a pedestrian on the motorway, but for what reason we do not yet know."

In the aftermath of the incident traffic chaos ensued as junctions 10, 12, 13 and 14 were closed.

The eastbound carriageway was reopened at around 4.10 pm along with junctions 12, 13 and 14 of the westbound carriageway.

But the road around junction 10 remained closed until after 6pm while the investigation into the accident took place.

Hundreds of motorists were forced to find alternative routes at the busiest time of the day.

Grace Coleman, a resident in Plover View for 14 years, said: “I thought there was a football match going on because it was about the right time of day.

“But then they landed the helicopter on the motorway and they weren’t letting any traffic through at all, so I knew something was up.”

Another eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said: “It was sheer pandemonium.

“The bridge was lined with police cars and it was three deep with people looking down onto the motorway at the air ambulance.

“You could see the drivers of the vehicles involved looking shocked as they sat on the embankment, being tended to by paramedics.

“There was traffic chaos as people were trying to find alternative routes to get wherever they were going.

“My thoughts go to this lady and her family.”

Burnley MP Gordon Birtwistle described the incident as ‘tragic’ and said he sympathised with the driver whose vehicle hit the woman.

He said: “It must have been horrendous for the driver. When you’re doing whatever speed - 65mph or 70mph - you don’t expect to see a pedestrian walking in front of you.

“It must have been a horrific experience and I’m sure it will be hard to get over.

“I also hope this woman makes a full recovery.”

Burnley Council Leader Charlie Briggs also said his ‘heart went out’ to the driver.

He said: “It’s hard to comment without knowing what her mindset was. Was she trying to kill herself or did she not realise she was on the motorway?”

Anyone with information about the incident should call Motorway Police on 01772 410465 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

I hope the injuries are not too serious.
I understand there needs to be an investigation. why do they have to close the motorway for so long after the people have been moved?
on the continent incidents like this usualy take about an hour to sort out and the road reopened. but not in britain, why? I wonder if we were paying road tolls would the delays be the same?

Yeah, get a shift on with those investigations. Never mind looking for clues that might indicate the speed, direction and actions of the drivers involved, whether weather conditions, animals, pedestrians or road markings and layout contributed to the crash or whether anything at the scene points to a mechanical failure that could potentially place thousands of others at risk...
.
We need to get where we’re going you know. HURRY UP!!!
.
On a more serious note, I sincerely hope those involved make a fast and full recovery.

Allegedley the woman has fallen from Gannow Bridge. If so, this could be a different investigation from a road traffic accident.

He is OBVIOUSLY taking the mick out of the post above!

I thought any police 'incident' on the motorway meant that someone was thinking or has jumped from a bridge. Anything else is either road traffic accident or someone has run across road e.t.c. only jumping gets called an incident BUT wait and see.

It's not the fact that I was one of thousands of people delayed by this "incident" that pees me off it's the fact that another selfish individual endangered the lives of others by jumping onto the M65. Why are these all to frequent "incidents" reported as people falling from bridges, let's have it right they climb barriers designed to stop people from "falling" from these bridges and then jump, you just don't fall off a m way bridge into the path of fast moving traffic!
It's not been confirmed yet but it's rumoured she has died from her injuries in which case she achieved what she set out to do and before the sympathizers come on hear calling me heartless spare a thought for the traumatised motorists that were forced to witness this horror whilst going about their own business and the emergency service workers who have to deal with the aftermath. I also have a very close friend who broke his back, pelvis, legs and arm whilst jumping, yes jumping from a m way bridge in Burnley many years ago,he survived and his smashed bones are now held together with steel rods and plates and titanium screws and he is in constant pain but to this day he admits it was the most stupid not to mention painful thing he has ever done.

I was held up in the traffic and was amazed at how many people seemed to be getting infuriated in their cars pulling out on each other trying to get 3inch closer to the exit - it was obvious to anyone with half a brain something serious had happened and as such there would be a hold up but so what - as xxkezxx wrote it was a minor irritation to those held up but the lives of this lady and her family and that of the drivers of the vehicles involved whose lives are still on hold from that tragic moment when this took place. And as for anyone giving grief about the lady's state of mind and whether or not this was an intentional act to end her life please keep your calous opinions to yourselves - many people suffer from depression it is one of the biggest killers in the UK and because of biggots quick to mouth off and put people down its the hardest one to seek help for - if she had a broken leg you would help her out if she had cancer you would feel sorry for her but if she has the audacity to suffer from depression no-one wants to know or help and because of this people suffering from depression do extreme things as they feel its their only way out and to get away from narrow minded people. I hope this lady survives my heart goes out to her, her family & friends and all who were involved in the incident whether they were the innocent drivers or the medical and police attendees.

I doubt it was them, a long stretch of motorway BUT they could easily walk it in a year!

That picture just shows how sick people are - 3 deep looking at potentially a dead body.... I admit if I was there I would have had a look at police action BUT not if others were forming a crowd.

I hope the lady is feeling better now. I cant believe she may have got pushed that is just unbelievable. In situations like this you always think its never going to happen to you and people just ignore it and play a blind eye to it. When you have been in a similar situation thats when you become more vigilant. I had previously been in a road accident a few years ago and I used McKeowns Solicitors Milton Keynes to help me get a financial claim but still no amount of money will give me the confidence to drive again as I am just scared of having that responsibility 3 years on!

If this lady has been pushed, or jumped, or wandered onto the M65, I feel very sorry for her and hope she is getting the best treatment and her prognosis is good. I was witness to the few seconds after the man jumped from the same bridge that's in the picture last year. Not a pretty sight. The poor guy led in the carraigeway, people being physically sick, people besides themselves with grief, cars all over the motorway. Luckily he didn't get hit but he was suffering all the same. What I'm getting to is that compassion, not criticism and whinging, is required in these circumstances! 2 hours waiting is nothing compared to someone's life maybe being saved! If it was your mother/sister/daught
er...I'm sure you'd be the first to want help!

you got to be seriously messed up inside to jump off a motorway bridge if thats whats she has done. imagine driving down the motorway at 70 with wife and kids in car and seeing someone fall off a bridge.. sod that. hopefully it will all come out in the wash.
