Another bid to build 86 homes in Bacup

A MAJOR housing scheme to the south of Bacup town centre is set to be considered afresh by councillors tonight.

Several abortive bids have been made to develop the land, between Rockcliffe Road and Grafton Villas, in recent years.

Plans for 90 homes were first approved in 2004, including 23 two-bedroom properties and the rest three or four bedroom units.

This decision was reaffirmed in 2006, after new housing allocations were brought in, but the scheme never saw the light of day.

Another smaller project, to build 80 properties, was due to be considered in July 2008 but was later withdrawn.

Fresh proposals have now been drafted by Pendle-based Barnfield Construction which could see 86 homes constructed.

The first phase would include 50 homes being released for sale and a second would see 36 ‘affordable’ rental properties developed, with access roads from Grafton Villas and Anderson Close.

But a number of neighbours have objected against the plans, fearing the development would lead to traffic problems and noise pollution.

And the Environment Agency has now objected to the scheme, stating that it is believed to pose a flooding risk, so the plans have been recommended for refusal.

Councillors on the development control committee will make a decision on the plans tonight.
