Weekly clean-up squads to blitz Burnley litter

12:36pm Friday 12th March 2010

DEDICATED clean-up squads are to hit the streets of Burnley.

The council has teamed up with contractor Veolia to carry out weekly clean-ups of litter and fly-tipping on main roads, back streets, grassed areas and any other public areas where there is a serious problem that is causing an eyesore.

The deep clean squads will operate every Tuesday and Wednesday and will cover the whole of the borough.

The initiative will be funded from existing budgets using efficiency savings made by the council.

Councillor Charlie Briggs, the council’s executive member responsible for tackling anti-social behaviour, said: “People want the council to tackle litter and flytipping and clean up our borough.

“Burnley Council has a zero tolerance approach to the minority of people who don’t care and who think it’s all right to drop litter and dump rubbish.

“It isn’t, and we’re fining more and more of them either through fixed penalties or prosecuting them in court.”
