Rossendale residents vow to stop developers

RESIDENTS vowed to stop any developers planning to build in three villages in Rossendale.

A heated debate took place at the Old Fire Station as the future of Loveclough, Crawshawbooth and Goodshaw was discussed.

Rossendale Council presented a core strategy for the three villages to 50 residents who rejected all the options for development during the next few years.

David Hempsall, of Loveclough, questioned the council’s efforts to notify the locals about the consultation.

He said: “We found out about this meeting tonight by chance.

“The meeting itself and the presentation have been fine, but the truth is what the council has provided us with is not a vision.

“It is a mish mash of points printed on paper.”

Housing, retail and wind and hydro energy sites were at the top of the agenda for future development in the area.

Bosses at the council, however, stressed nothing was set in stone and the purpose of the meeting was to draw up a policy written by the residents to safeguard the future of the villages.

Council planning officer Adrian Smith said: “The fact is we have to build 225 houses every year somewhere in Rossendale to abide by government policy.

“Attractive places are always attractive to developers, so we have to discuss places like Loveclough, Crawshawbooth and Goodshaw.

“This is a pre-consultation stage, so it is purely discussion at present, but we need to find out what the residents want in their area in terms of development, not just what they do not want.”

Another forum meeting focusing solely on the core strategy will take place at Crawshawbooth Library tomorrow at 5.30pm.

Will these be Council houses ? I don't think so. They will be detached four bedroom houses to gather the maximum amount of Council tax. Why not just admit its a money making exercise !

It's a storm in a tea-cup.

As they said it's a 'pre-consultation' which is an attempt to have a discussion with residents before any formal consultation happens.

Have these residents got any ideas they want to put forward on how they want Loveclough improving? Or are they just going to say 'no' to everything then complain when all investment money is directly elsewhere in the Borough?

Hey Bacupboy, dont you know people are flooding into this country, so that means were going to need more and more houses, until England is one huge housing estate, until the real problem is addressed ie England is to over-populated then im afraid you better get use to a Rossendle valley that is made of concrete.

I live in the affected area and have only discovered this on here. I also have freinds who also live in the area and were also unaware of the meeting and issues.
Why if this is for public debate, are those who are affected not informed. We can not be expected to scoure every media source for potential residents meetings. The council should inform all residents by post, or is this intential ?

This has been going on for sometime. The council have no money at all. They infact want to build 475 houses and not 275.The influx of people comeing into this country is drowning us.But i feel no matter what we say or do we will be fighting a looseing battle. If people own land and are struggling for money then their only option maybe is to sell what land they have. And who wouldnt if they had no money. This is when the council steps in.because they no the development potential and financial gain for them.I can only cringe at what is comeing rossendale and the surrounding areas will be a breeze block jungle. If these houses are built and wind farm.Which schools will all the extra children go to.Or will it be fifty to a class. There are over 500 empty houses in this area that the council have marked down for regeneration. So why build more.I want to no if these houses are built who will be filling them migrant workers who already have taken our jobs and no doubt played our system to their own tune.We are already in a mess and i fear its going to get worse. There is a meeting i have been told to discuss this further on the 8th of july at the top club at loveclough to start at 6.30pm.If you want voice your concerns then you should attend.

Remind me which law says we have to build 225 houses a year forever, Burnley Road cannot cope with the houses built in the last 30 years and what does our MP have to say, or is she to busy clocking up the miles?

The council may be guilty of lack of advertising of the meeting on Thursday but as someone who was there - people simply wanted to vent there anger and not listen. Some good points were made by residents and the council will have to listen. Apparently Tuesday nights second meeting was a farce and cancelled as the organisers had no idea how much emotion there was on this subject and only expected a couple of dozen people. Whats the agenda of the local councillors then?
