CAR enthusiasts are hosting a special event in honour of a 10-year-old boy who was hit in the face by a firework in a ‘freak accident’ last year.

It is not known whether Tyler Norris-Sayers will get full vision back in his eye five months after being struck during a bonfire display at the Railway Social Club in Burnley.

A firework shot into the crowd hitting the Whittlefield Primary School pupil in the face and knocking him to the ground.

The incident is still being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive.

After trips back and forth to Burnley Hospital and seven operations, his mum Nicola was told they could do no more for him and he was referred to Manchester Royal Eye Hospital where he has an appointment on Monday.

The 38-year-old said: “The hospital was at a loss as to what they could do. They do not have the specialist facilities.

“We do not know what they are going to say at this appointment. He is worried about it.

“At this stage he still cannot see. When he has been having operations they get the eye to open and get rid of the scar tissue and he can see light and colour but can’t see anything in focus.

“We do not know whether that will change or it will stay the same.

“They have been cutting the scar tissue but it keeps growing back which is why he had to keep going back to the hospital.

“We don’t know if he will be able to see. It is all still very much up in the air. We are hoping we will learn more on Monday.

“He is not in any pain and he is just trying to get on with things.

“He has been very brave. I would not have dealt with it in the same way.”

She said this is the second event Japanese car enthusiast club Jap2Jap has organised for Tyler.

She said: “Tyler is car mad. He has been obsessed with them since he was about one and a half.

“The support we have had from the community has been really overwhelming.”

Everyone is welcome at the event which will take place at the Empire Business Centre opposite Sycamore Farm in Liverpool Road from noon on Sunday.
