A FATHER and daughter battled 40 degree heat to help improve the quality of life for a Ugandan village.

David Roberts and 16-year-old Maddie from Barrowford spent 10 days in Iki Iki and worked on a variety of projects.

Along with friend William Towneley, 16, they helped maintain the village’s water well, refurbish and paint houses and teach basic English lessons.

The team were sponsored by Burnley-based refrigeration company, Coolkit, and all money raised was donated to the Bumba Foundation.

Maddie and William, both students at St Christopher’s High School in Accrington, raised £2,500 for the charity.

Mr Roberts, who owns MBS Corporate Advisory in Barrowford, said the trip was an unforgettable experience.

He said: “The living conditions were very different to what we have at home and it was a huge culture shock.

“But the generosity of the village people, and the massive smiles of the kids who followed us everywhere were very humbling.

“Painting the bricks in the village was important because of the 40 degree heat they endure.

“The bricks start to crack and weaken because of the soaring temperatures.

“So even though it doesn’t sound like a big job, it’s important for the homes and buildings to be covered.

“Doing our bit made us feel great and to know we left a positive mark on those people is really satisfying.

“The teenagers did an amazing job in raising all the money through cake sales and non-uniform days at school.

“We made some lasting friendships."
