A WOMAN was rescued from a bedroom in a terraced house after kitchen fire early this morning.

Crews from Burnley Fire station were called to the property on Belmont Grove in Brunshaw just after midnight.

A man was outside the house and told them a woman was trapped in an upstairs bedroom.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly rescued her and she was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

The fire is believed to have been started by a chip pan.

Crew manager Dave Robinson said: "Three appliances were sent to the mid-terraced house in Belmont Grove in Brunshaw shortly after midnight.

"A man was outside the property concerned that a woman was in an upstairs bedroom unable to get out.

"Four firefighters in breathing apparatus went upstairs and quickly rescued her while the blaze was extinguished.

"Paramedics arrived and took her to hospital with smoke inhalation.

"The fire, which we believe began with a chip pan, caused severe damage to the kitchen.

"Luckily to door was closed so the fire did not spread and the rest of the damage was limited to smoke.

"Unfortunately, although the house had a smoke alarm it was not working.

"Investigations into the cause are continuing.

"We would remind householders to ensure their smoke alarms are in working order and the importance of closing doors on fires to minimise the spread of flames."
