A FIRE broke out in a loft in Burnley yesterday afternoon.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at a house in Harefield Rise at around 4.30pm.

The occupiers got out of the house safely after calling 999.

The fire began in an under-eaves storage cupboard and looked as if it could have been spreading into the loft, Lancashire Fire and Rescue said.

Damage was caused to some possessions such as family photos, but most were salvaged.

Roof felting and slates were also damaged but the fire was mostly contained in the cupboard by an access door.

Firefighters from Burnley, Nelson and Hyndburn were tackling the fire for around an hour and a half.

An aerial ladder platform was brought as a precaution but was not needed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
