Police officers received reports that cannabis was being grown at a home in Brennand Street.

They swooped on Sunday at around 8am and discovered the cannabis plants.

Around 60 plants were seized by the police although a spokesman for the service said it looked as though one of the rooms had already been harvested.

A 49-year-old man from Burnley has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Inspector Phil Hutchinson said: “We received the reports of a cannabis farm from a member of the public yesterday morning.

“Police went to secure the site which they found to be a cannabis cultivation scene.

“We are unsure of the value of the cannabis found because it depends on the stage of growth the plants are at.”

Cllr Shah Hussain, who represents the Daneshouse with Stoneyholme ward on Burnley Council, believes that this is just one incident in a much wider problem.

He said: “I think we have seen an increase in these home made cannabis farms up and down the country recently.

“We recognise that this is a problem and it is good to see that the police are sending out the message that they will act and give out convictions to these criminals once they are caught.”
