At about 10.40pm, a silver Ford Fiesta was travelling along Trafalgar Street towards Burnley when it collided with the man.

He was taken to Royal Preston Hospital to be treated for severe leg injuries, a broken arm and swelling to the brain.

Yesterday, his condition was described as critical and his family were with him at his bedside.

The driver of the Fiesta, a 44-year-old woman who lives in Accrington, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

As the incident was on a Saturday evening, police believe people may have been in the area on their way to or coming back from pubs and clubs in Burnley town centre and officers are keen to trace anyone who may have witnessed the incident.

Sgt Tracey Ward, from Burnley police, said: “My thoughts are with the pedestrian who is very poorly in hospital and his family.

“We are trying to determine exactly what happened and so I would like to speak to anyone who might have seen the collision.

“If you saw anything that could assist us, please call 101 quoting incident reference 1495 of July 9.”

Trinity ward councillor Howard Baker, said that Trafalgar Street was not notorious for speeding.

He said: “There are speed bumps at the college end of the street and the traffic is also slowed by the lights near the KFC and McDonalds takeaways.

“I would hope this is an isolated incident and my thoughts and those of my fellow ward councillors go out to the injured man and we hope he makes a full and quick recovery.”
