AN appeal has been issued by police after a suspected hit and run collision in Burnley on Saturday which has left an eight-year-old boy with a fractured skull.

Police say the youngster was struck by a silver car in the Hebrew Road area of Daneshouse at around 4.40pm but the vehicle failed to stop at the scene.

The child, who has not been named, was taken to Manchester Children's Hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.

Traffic officers are unsure about how the incident occurred and have issued a plea for assistance.

Pc Peter Brandon, from the road policing unit, said: "I am asking anyone who saw the collision or who may have any information that could help to come forward.

"Similarly, if you were driving a large silver vehicle and think you could have been involved, please come forward. At this stage it isn't about pointing the finger of blame but about finding out what has happened to cause this incident."

Witnesses can call the police non-emergency number, 101, quoting incident reference number 998 of April 16.
