A GROUP of students from Pendle Community High School have been using their brains this week as part of the Maths is Everywhere project.

The European Erasmus project encourages youngsters to understand the presence of maths in every day life.

Students used shapes to build replicas of iconic buildings from across the world.

Earlier this year they visited Poland to have a look at how maths was taught in that country.

Debra Grogan, who is leading on the project at the school, said: “In February staff visited Rudki in Poland for the first transnational meeting of our new Erasmus project.

“Staff were warmly welcomed and after a brief tour of the local area sat down to business. The theme ‘Maths Is Everywhere’ is designed to support young people to see the importance of maths in their everyday life and how maths can be creative and beautiful.

“The week flew past and the staff brought back amazing ideas to share with colleagues and with pupils. Throughout the next two years we will be focusing on maths and developing our pupils’ observation skills alongside their functional everyday maths skills.”

A spokesman for the scheme said: “The project ‘Maths is Everywhere’ is addressed to primary school pupils and aims to investigate how mathematics is involved in every school subject and how pupils can learn about different European countries through mathematics, a basic school subject.

“Teaching and learning mathematics has a wide range of different aspects. With this project we intend to find new approaches to learn and teach mathematics. We also intend to find new means of motivation as well for the teachers as for the pupils.”
