A HASLINGDEN man stabbed himself to death while semi-naked in his own bathroom, an inquest heard.

David Brewer, 30, was found with ‘a number of lacerations’ to his torso and limbs at his flat in Manchester Road.

East Lancashire coroner Richard Taylor was told that Mr Brewer, a cannabis user, became ‘estranged’ from his family seven years ago. He suffered mental health problems and had not been seen for three days before he was discovered covered in blood by his flatmate on December 10 last year.

Mr Taylor said Mr Brewer last spoke to his family five years ago before he was sectioned under the Mental Health Act, and last had contact with a GP in 2012.

At Burnley Coroner’s Court, Mr Taylor said: “Since then, he lived in his flat and kept himself to himself.

“He was found on December 10 in the bath with significant injuries and a blood-covered kitchen knife was found nearby.”

Mr Brewer had made contact with Lancashire Care’s mental health early intervention team in December last year, who said he had been doing well until the previous month, when concerns were raised that he wasn’t coping with his condition as well as he had been doing.

A post-mortem examination carried out by Dr Richard Prescott at Royal Blackburn Hospital discovered a low concentration of the anti-psychotic drug Olanzapine, consistent with therapeutic use, in Mr Brewer’s system.

Dr Prescott said death was due to chest stab wounds. Mr Taylor said Mr Brewer took his own life and added: “It seems, with the number of wounds and injuries, that his intention was clear.”
